Seibert Architects in florida / caribbean Architect Fall 2009

Seibert Architects is featured in the florida / caribbean Architect magazine Fall 2009 issue for the Cohen House's Excellence in Architecture-Renovations & Additions Merit Award. The jury that awarded Seibert Architects this award said " Florida's famous mid-century modernism is in good hands with skillful renovations like this one".

Designed by Paul Rudolph in 1954 the original owners intended for the house to be used for living, entertaining and ensemble concerts. Renovations to the house were conducted in 2005/2006 with the owner requiring that the house be documented and restored to its original state by repairing deteriorated structural components, rehabilitating the finishes and original furniture and providing modern conveniences and technologies to accommodate today's lifestyle.

Photographic prints from the original Ezra Stoller negatives were used to documents the design intent and detailing.

The article describes the house as an instant flood of peace created by the zen spaces. Owner Dennis Reese andFelice Shulaner describe the house as "There's a feeling of Zen here, it's the next best thing to yoga class."

The house designed by E.J. Seibert FAIA was designed in 1962. Over time the house had become closed-off and somber. Sarah Colandro

In the May 2009 issue of Style A Magazine of the Herald Tribune Media Group - Sarah Colandro was in an interveiwed feature Making Spacees Sing written by Su Byron.

Sarah joined Seibert Architects at expanding the interior design services of commercial design projects in 2008. She joins a team of qualifyed professionals dedicated to great design with an enriched history in the South-West Florida community.

The interview by Su goes into Sarah's life of a designer and how she came to be. Sarah found out what Interior Designers are responsible for, ie. floor plans, sections, complying with building codes, she was "sold."

I may not design the windows or roof, but my hands are on all the fun stuff inside.

Sarah's ability to make each project "sing" inspires from her abilities of keeping below the budget, her background on the psychology of color and its use in interior spaces, her dedication to keeping "green", and her extensive knowledge in spacial design and history.

A Classic Time Piece

Photographs by Matt McCourtney

The T.H. Mitchell House by Seibert Architects is recognized in the article

"The Once and Future House"
from the Style Magazine A Magazine of the Herald-Tribune March 2009
By Marty Fugate

The article walks you through the home, detailing every encounter and the man accountable for it - with always having a great story to tell behind every piece.
"The lines are clean and the materials honest; a simple, rectilinear geometry of glass, white Ocala block and white fir post and beams."
"New Owner Michael Cichon is the man responsible. An avid art collector and art dealer, he's equally in love with the art of yesterday and today. Ancient tribal masks and figures bump shoulders with contemporary paintings, photographs and sculptures. It all looks great in this timeless house."
Cichon had purchased the house in 2003 with ambitions of restoring a lost civilization's timepiece.

"Cichon got to work, 'I took a utility blade to the rug...' Cichon kept working, but not alone. Architect Sam Holladay, AIA at Seibert Architects coordinated the restoration"
"For Cichon, it's the perfect house. There's 1560 square feet of interior space and 940 square feet of patio space, but it's all the house he needs. Nothing needs to be added, nothing could be taken away without hurting it. And that's how he defines perfection."
Cichon continues to say,
"Keep it honest - nothing fake. It's a good policy for architecture, and a good policy for life."

Article in the Herald Tribune.

As put in the Sunday January 18, 2009 edition of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Sunday Real Estate section: Edited by Herold Bubil:

http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20090118/ARTICLE/901180305/2117

"Retreat by the Sea"

"With waves crashing in the background, craftsman at The Hermitage complete the
rebuilding of the Tom Dignam Beach Cottage."
The article continues to talk about The Hermitage Tom Dignam Beach Cottage and the reconstruction Seibert Architects did with Pat Ball Construction. The Cottage was restoration of salvaged materials. The 700sf cottage was built in 1934 and originally housed three small apartments.

“‘We had to totally rebuild it,' said contractor Pat Ball.’it had fallen into
total disrepair; the only thing we were able to salvage was the interior
paneling.'"
"'A lot of what we were doing was looking at what a building that was built in
1934, with no code, no (hurricane) windloads or any of that kind of stuff - how
do you take that and put it back together?' said Sam Holladay."
The article talks a little more on what was done to the structure.

"The building originally housed three small apartments; now it has one artist
studio and two rooms currently used as offices. Two of the rooms have the
original cypress paneling and built-on-site wooden doors with original latches.
But the wooden floors, plumbing fixtures and roof system, topped by rigid
insulation and 5V-crimp metal, are new.”
"The exterior paint colors were chosen after a bit of detective work. 'By
peeling off layers of paint we discovered these colors,' said Holladay."
The Hermitage Artist Retreat Inc. is a retreat designed to nurture guest artists. It is a time for artists to reflect on their work and lives. It is a six week stay that requires nothing from the artists but their self devotion to art.

"It is a very heavy working stay. It is an opportunity for focus and
reflection and that part of the creative process that is very had to carve out a
busy life," says Bruce Rodgers, Executive Director of The Hermitage Artist
Retreat.
And if you are looking for the application form,

"It is by invitation only. When you get that letter in the mail inviting
you to work, it is a very meaningful statement about where you are in your
career," says Rodgers.

"Textbook Modern"

Images by Matt McCourtney

As put in the Sunday January 18, 2009 edition of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Michael Saunders & Company section:

"Textbook Modern"
"...Mediterranean Revival is not a Florida home-grown style..."

The article continues to state that there is a Floridian style that emanated from the mid twentieth century having roots here in Sarasota. Known as the Sarasota School of Architecture, this style of deep overhangs, flat roofs, large movable glass walls, floating planes that give the sense of light and airiness can be found through-out Sarasota. This iconic time period took prominent from the 1940s through the late 1960 early 1970s and forming fathers were Ralph Twitchell, Paul Rudolph, Mark Hampton, Victor Lundy, Gene Leedy, and our very own Tim Seibert whom founded Seibert Architects.

The article continues by talking about Seibert Archtects' remodeled and addition to 250 Bird Key Drive House.

"...in the style of the Sarasota School of Architecture; its clean lines and open feeling true to that renowned style. The dramatic foyer is visible as you approach the home and, once inside the walls of glass drink-in its lush setting even as the home delivers maximum privacy."

250 Bird Key Drive House was a remodel and addition done by Samuel Holladay AIA, Dale S. Parks AIA, and Pamela Holladay ASID.
